Jennifer Morgan Smith and John Robbins
Jennifer and John recall meeting at the 2013 American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy conference in Portland, Oregon. It was one of those chance meetings that so many times is overlooked as a true opportunity for connection. As Jennifer sat at a booth representing and marketing the facility she was working for at the time, she saw that John’s name tag indicated that he lived in Utah, where she was living. Instead of just making a mental note though, Jennifer spoke up and introduced herself. The two of them spoke for about 10 minutes, making that first connection with each other that became an important story for them. This chance meeting led to contact down the road.
John and Jennifer celebrated their proms 2165 miles apart, and 8 years apart, but as they got to know each other years later, they shared with each other these prom pictures. They used these to connect to each other, speaking to their adolescent nature and that it was no mistake they ended up being around adolescents and their families in their careers. These pictures also served to give each of them an idea of the other’s personality. We will leave you to define that from what you see! But we provide these here, so you know that we understand our roots, how they blend with each other, and how a small-town boy and a big city girl bring their diverse backgrounds together to create dynamic trainings that keep themselves “Forever Young.”
As their story began to connect, John was on faculty at a master’s program for marriage and family therapists, arranging internship sites, in the state, for students. Jennifer and John met up again, and Jennifer became an internship supervisor for a student in the program John was working for. During this time, they both began sharing their mutual passion for training and supervision. For the next few years, John and Jennifer, now during intentional meetings, had several conversations about training, teaching, and consulting. These conversations evolved through the years on how they could best impact the mental health field, as well as the mental health within the community.
The first step Jennifer and John made was to create a course that focused on training supervisors in the mental health field. This course highlighted the best practices for preparing new students and counselors to become excellent resources to the community, as licensed professionals. After several discussions, Jennifer and John found their passage into making a big impact in the mental health field and the mental health community. Jennifer and John tapped into their passion for training and found that their work together is creative, fun, and purposeful, which is their ultimate goal! Since then, they created a plan to expand their own range of influence, as organizations, corporations, agencies, and individuals have reached out to them for guidance on how best to team build and become purposeful in the way they address healthy connection in and outside the workplace.
